WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY: FILM VS. DIGITAL?
WHEN IT COMES TO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY, YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL!

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – May 5, 2005- In the photography world, the debate rages on about whether digital photography will replace film, and which medium rules? So for wedding photography, does digital photography reign, or is film still king?

Ask Deborah Wallin of A Beautiful Day Photography in Newport Beach and she'll say that there is no medium more appropriate for wedding photography than film! "Sure digital is cheaper to produce and has the value of instant gratification", but there is something more important when it comes to wedding photography--permanence. "We choose film for its archival quality. The bride wants her wedding images to last a lifetime (and beyond!). Film offers that."

Film has stood the test of time. Historical black and white negatives still exist from the 1800’s. If properly stored, color negatives last 200 years and black and white negatives 500 years.

At A Beautiful Day Photography Deborah and Raya put a strong emphasis on using real black and white film. Besides the archival benefit of film, for A Beautiful Day Photography, the choice is also about aesthetics. “As artists we are in love with the medium. Black and white film is actually an emulsion of silver. You can see the rich tones of silver in the print. High quality fiber-based paper is also impregnated with silver or in some cases platinum. So, when you look at a beautiful black and white print from a negative you are really look at tones of silver etched by light. Our photography is Art, and for us the choice between film and digital is an artistic one.”

But is there a place for digital? Of course! Digital can't be matched for its convenience, cost-effectiveness, and of course the instant gratification factor. The solution? Take advantage of both! "At A Beautiful Day Photography, we shoot all film for our weddings and then we have all of our images scanned by Pictage so that digital files are available, too," says Wallin, "that way, you get the advantages of both mediums, the permanence and beauty of real negatives, and the convenience and versatility of digital. All of our clients’ wedding images are up online shortly after their wedding, and we use our high resolution scans to make our magazine style albums, but our clients also get to keep their negatives forever, and nothing can replace that."

So, when the question is Digital vs. Film, the answer is both! When it comes to wedding photography, you can have it all!
